Vamråk Herring Saltery

Kalvåg became a real fishing metropolis during the mid-1800s when the herring fishing industry brought in several thousand travelling fishermen. The salting houses were in operation right up to the 1990s and represent one part of the food industry which herring fishing gave rise to. Today they are part of the Sogn and Fjordane Kystmuseet (coastal museum). Guided tours are available by arrangement, and give an exciting glimpse into how the fishing industry has evolved from the 1800s up to today.
